Project Lifesaver:

A program vital to the safety of people with disabilities is Project Lifesaver nationwide program administered locally by VBPD. People with certain disabilities are eligible for the program which fits them with a transmitter unit allowing the police locate the person in the event they wander away from home.The program relies on volunteers to meet with assigned clients, clean and test the transmitter unit, and replace the battery approximately every 30 days. Volunteers receive training on the entire process and each volunteer is typically assigned one or more clients within their police precinct. Volunteering takes about an hour or two each month to fulfill the volunteer duties. 

Tom Thomas is the civilian volunteer coordinator for the program. If you would like to be a Project Lifesaver volunteer, Tom will be conducting a client management training class on September 21st. Below is his message detailing the class:

The next VBPD Project Lifesaver "Client Management" (Battery changing) class is scheduled. Please let me know if you plan on attending. If you know someone who might be interested please forward this email to them and ask them to contact me via email so I can have their name and email address. Here are the particulars:

 

The class will be held at Rescue station 8 - 1243 Bayne Dr. Off of Old Donation Prky near Sentara VB General. Turn on to Bayne and drive past the fire station and continue on to the far side of the rescue station. Park on the side or in back of the rescue station and enter the training room on the side of the building.

Time: 9:00 to 1:00 pm

No lunch break please eat breakfast and/or bring a snack and something to drink with you. If anyone has any questions about the class or Project Lifesaver please call, text or email me.

Rain Barrel Class

If you’re interested in installing your own rain barrel at home, the Virginia Beach Master Gardeners host monthly rain barrel workshops from March to October. Participants get a rain barrel and a diverter kit plus instruction and hands-on assembly of their rain barrels. 

There are two workshops left this season: Saturday, September 14 and Saturday, October 12, each from 9-10am. Registration is $50 and includes your rain barrel, diverter kit, and education.
